FLUX.1 [dev]

Released Aug 2024

FLUX.1 [dev] is an open-weight text-to-image synthesis model developed by Black Forest Labs. Positioned as the mid-tier developer variant in the FLUX.1 suite, it is guidance-distilled from the proprietary [pro] version to offer high-fidelity output with improved computational efficiency. The model is released under a non-commercial license and is intended for research, academic, and artistic applications.

The model is built on a 12 billion parameter flow transformer architecture, which utilizes a hybrid design of multimodal and parallel diffusion transformer blocks. By employing flow matching—a general framework for generative modeling that includes diffusion as a special case—the model achieves superior training stability and sampling performance compared to traditional diffusion techniques. It also incorporates rotary positional embeddings and parallel attention layers to enhance hardware efficiency and spatial reasoning.

Key capabilities of FLUX.1 [dev] include exceptional prompt adherence, high visual quality, and the ability to render complex details such as human anatomy and legible typography. It is designed to interpret descriptive, natural language prompts effectively, reducing the need for the keyword-heavy "prompt engineering" required by earlier generation diffusion models.
