Gemini 1.0 Pro

Released Dec 2023

Gemini 1.0 Pro is a multimodal large language model developed by Google, designed to serve as a versatile solution for a wide range of tasks. It is the mid-sized variant in the Gemini 1.0 family, positioned between the on-device Gemini Nano and the highly complex Gemini Ultra. The model is engineered to balance performance and computational efficiency, specifically optimized for reasoning, planning, and content generation.

Built to be natively multimodal, Gemini 1.0 Pro can seamlessly understand and operate across different types of information, including text, images, and code. This architecture allows it to process complex reasoning tasks and technical coding prompts with high precision. In performance evaluations provided by Google, the model demonstrated competitive results on industry benchmarks such as MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding) and GSM8K for mathematical reasoning.

The model was trained on Google's proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), specifically utilizing TPU v4 and v5e clusters for increased scalability and speed. While it follows a Transformer-based architecture, Google has not publicly disclosed its exact parameter count. Gemini 1.0 Pro replaced earlier models such as PaLM 2 as the primary engine for many of Google's conversational AI services and developer APIs.
