Mistral Large is a closed-source large language model released by Mistral AI in February 2024. Positioned as the company's flagship model at launch, it was designed for complex reasoning, mathematical problem-solving, and code generation. It demonstrated performance levels comparable to other high-tier proprietary models on standard benchmarks like MMLU.

The model features a 32,000-token context window, allowing it to process and recall information from extensive documents. It was natively designed for multilingual support, offering proficiency in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. This inclusion reflects a focus on European languages and a nuanced understanding of their specific grammar and cultural contexts.

Mistral Large also introduced native function calling capabilities and a modular approach to moderation. Unlike the earlier Mistral 7B and Mixtral 8x7B models, Mistral Large was initially released as a proprietary model available through specialized API endpoints and cloud partnerships rather than as an open-weights release.
