Journey

Released Dec 2023

Journey is a neural text-to-speech (TTS) model developed by Google, designed to produce high-fidelity, conversational audio that mimics natural human speech patterns. Based on Google DeepMind's AudioLM architecture, the model focuses on generating speech with realistic prosody, rhythm, and spontaneous elements such as disfluencies, making it distinct from traditional synthesis models.\n\nThe model is optimized for low-latency applications, supporting real-time streaming for interactive use cases like virtual assistants, gaming, and narrative content. It was notably used to power the naturalistic dialogue features in Google’s NotebookLM "Audio Overviews." Unlike some of Google's other voice tiers, the Journey model is engineered to prioritize spontaneous-sounding delivery over granular SSML (Speech Synthesis Markup Language) control.\n\nIn early 2025, Google began transitioning and rebranding Journey-tier voices into the Chirp HD family as part of a broader consolidation of its audio generation technologies. Despite this transition, the underlying technology remains a core component of Google's conversational AI and voice synthesis portfolio.
